Yesterday I had the pleasure of celebrating the welcoming of our 4000th Racker to Rackspace. It’s amazing to see how far our company has grown and it makes me proud to have been along for the journey these past six years. I appreciate every day I have been there and I hope to be around for the next 4000 Rackers to come!
With all of the remembrance going on this past weekend, in honor of the ten year anniversary of 9/11, we felt the desire to contribute in some way. We wanted to show our admiration and respect to all the lives lost on that sad day. One of our Team Leads, Stacy Adams, found the “Warriors at Heart” 5K run/walk taking place at McAllister Park. All of the proceeds from the race were going to the Wounded Warrior Project, which is a charity I am extremely passionate about. I was ‘in’ the second it was mentioned and by the time we sent out emails to our teams, we got 16 runners/walkers signed up and ready to race!
This past Saturday a group of Running Rackers (our team name) woke up at the crack of dawn in order to show their pride and support for the Wounded Warrior Project. It was a nice breezy morning in comparison to the heat wave we in San Antonio have become accustomed to. I grabbed a light jacket and a nice hot cup of coffee to keep me warm while my team started to set up our tent at 7am. It was amazing to see everyone’s smiling faces and excitement as we stretched and got prepared for the run. We had a few Rackers that were participating in their first EVER 5K! We tightened our shoelaces, stretched our muscles and walked towards the starting mark. The Running Racker team was easy to spot since we were all sporting our camouflage headbands with the word RAX placed right in the center. Our friends and family core value really showed throughout the race as Rackers ran side by side cheering their teammates on and our entire team stayed until the very last Racker had crossed the finish line.
It was a great feeling to hear your teammates cheer you on and scream your name as you were crossing the finish line. There was a definite sense of teamwork!
Not only was I proud to be an American, but I was proud to be a Racker that day. The amount of pride and happiness I felt was inexplicable.
I want to thank everyone who ran/walked/jogged that day. You made my day and I can’t wait to do it again!! I completed the run in 30 minutes and 10 seconds which kept me at a good 10 minute/mile pace. I am happy enough with that
With the overbearing heat taking over San Antonio it was a welcomed surprise to receive a company email stating that Aguas Frescas were being handed out to Rackers in front of our office building! This wasn’t a mediocre little setup either, they went ALL out!!!
Rackers quickly embraced the welcomed break while they quenched their thirst with Fresh Squeezed Watermelon, Pineapple and Lemonade. There is nothing like enjoying a fresh glass of lemonade with your coworkers when the heat outside is hitting 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The best part is that no one got left behind either. The Rackers that went out to get their refreshments all made sure to bring an extra cup or two for their teammates. As our customers were calling and chatting in, the Rackers on the other side of the conversation were enjoying some delicious home made granola bars and lemonade. I bet you could tell that we were smiling from the other side of the phone. Thanks to Jaime Waltman for setting up this nice surprise for everyone. It was extremely enjoyed by all. Man, I love this place!!
This past Saturday started off as a humid, muggy and cloudy day…. but that weather sure didn’t stop 100+ Rackers and their families from attending the 1st Annual “Rackspace Friends and Family 5K.” When I got to the Castle parking lot I could see a ton of Rackers geared up in their running shorts, iPods, and Rackspace t-shirts ready to take in the run. Racker parents came ready with their racing strollers and all the kids were getting energized and pumped up as they anticipated the run! I have to say that it was so cute to see all of the little kids stretching and running around!

The whole goal of this event was to get Rackers and their families participating in a healthy activity while having some fun. I believe the event’s purpose achieved its success on that day! One of the best aspects of this run was the fact that the whole family could enjoy it. Lanham even brought his whole family to partake in the fun. How many other companies can say that about their CEO? The “friends and family” core value that we hold so dear as Rackers truly showed this weekend. Rackers encouraged each other during the race, volunteers handed out water throughout the course and everyone was cheering for their fellow runners, walkers, and joggers at the finish line. No one got left behind. That’s the beauty of Rackspace!

The Rackspace Wellness Committee did a fantastic job of putting this event together especially Tanya Ruyle, Ric Jimenez and Sugar Bear. I can’t wait till next year’s event! I hope to beat my time of 32 minutes and 17 seconds!
