So here is a scenario…. 3 men sitting at the dinner table sipping wine while gossiping about the social scene and current news of their surrounding circle of friends. They laugh about each others gains and misfortunes as well as their friends’. They gossip about the surrounding circle of friends and their relationships all promising to never reveal the conversations that have occurred between them. Sounds like Sex and the City huh? But since this scenario is concerning men, we will call it an Entourage example
Two bottles of wine down and the chatter comes flowing out like music. But why is it that men’s gossip is perceived rather different than women’s gossip?? When women do it, it is said to be for mischievous reasons or straight up entertainment. Why is this? Because we are more emotional creatures?? Nope, don’t think so. Is it because women feed off of this kind of information? Nope, I know men that fit this category. So why the difference in perception???? There are a million double standards for men and women, but when we are discussing the topic of Gossip- there is really no difference who it comes from.
Think about what gossip can do…. It can ruin a relationship, a friendship, cause the loss of a job, turn someone’s life into absolute emotional turmoil. But we all do it. As a female, if I hear something that affects a close loved one, how can I not tell them???? The whole basis of our friendship is to be honest with eachother. So…. do you tell or don’t you? Either way you are now stuck in a situation room with a double edged sword.
How an individual handles the Gossip is true testament to their character as well as the person’s intentions when revealing or with-holding gossip-like information. Women are perceived to run and tell the next person around them, but men are perceived to hold it in and keep the secret. Both of these assumptions are inaccurate. Have you ever heard of a woman saying “Oh he’s PMSing”? Its called the man-cycle. Women have the monthly period, followed by cramps and bloating and the occasional emotional turmoil. Men have been rumored to have a similar occurrence. Every once in a while our men go through a week of overeating, emotional depression, confusion and distress. Similar to women, this man time allows the individual to focus on whats really important or, finally focus on an issue they may have been keeping on the back burner.
While women indulge in chocolates and sweets. Men indulge on their beer and sports, or whatever other guilty pleasures brings them peace…..
( This is a little something that sparked my interest today…. more to come)
