    Day 10

    2011 - 02.09

Yay!! Today I completed day 10 of my Paleo strict challenge :) I have 20 more days to go. I have not cheated and let me tell you, its been rough. I miss chocolate. I miss splenda in my coffee, I miss my after work out protein shakes, and most of all I miss my wine. Yes, I know wine is Paleo. But in this specific challenge, we have promised to steer clear of alcohol for the full 30 days. Since I made a bet with Rick, I find myself telling myself…. is one glass of wine worth $75??? Nope, not for me! Let’s hope I can stick it out after this weekend. We are planing on heading out to a friends ranch to celebrate a birthday. Since hunting season is over, there isn’t much more to do there except eat and drink. I think this will be my biggest challenge yet…. Luckily I have already purchased 3 paleo kits to keep my cravings and snacking in a healthy realm :)

Hey, If I survived Super Bowl Sunday with no beer and no burgers, wings and fries… I should be able to do this right?

    BRRRR its cold in here!

    2011 - 02.03

My oh my! This cold front came at the most inopportune time. Just when we thought the winter was behind us, the coldest off all cold fronts stops by for a visit. Its supposed to snow in San Antonio tonight… like actual snow! This type of weather makes me want to curl up on my couch with some hot cocoa and have the fireplace burning. But that’s not possible…. no chocolate in paleo!

Yesterday we embraced the cold by a challenge that coach Rick posted on the Alamo CF Blog. We ran…. We ran outside… and we ran in 18 degree weather…Yup we sucked it up! I didn’t want to punk out simply because I knew that piece of our WOD coming in to the gym. Little did I know that we were having a 2 parter. Part 1 was Back Squat Max (12 minutes, work in teams) and Part 2 was “Backpack”: 20 DB Thrusters and 200m run outside AMRAP in 12 minutes.

Part 1: I know my previous PR for Back Squat was 135lbs. Since I’ve been out in a while, I was not trying to beat it. I did however want to match my old record. We started the first 3 reps at 65, the next 3 reps at 85, then the next reps at 105. Once we started our 1 rep max we tried 115, which I accomplished. Erica, Amy and Monica were in my group. We started running out of time for our max rep so we decided to up the weight to our possible 1 max rep. My attempt at 135 was unsuccessful the first time :( And sadly, I ran out of time before I could try again. So I ended with a 115lb max for the day… but I’m pretty darn sure I could’ve met my 135 goal. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda, yea I know.. I sound like a brat :p

The second part of the WOD was “Back Pack”, as I mentioned earlier this WOD was for 20 DumbBell Thrusters and a 20 meter run outside. All ! can say, is thank god Frank let me borrow his wife’s gloves….. he saved my little hands from freezing. That run was brutal. I think i struggled more with that than the thrusters. I finished the WOD with 4 rounds completed.
    Part 2:

The best part of this workout was seeing the Crossfit 101 class coming in. I must clarify and mention that by “best’ I am being incredibly sarcastic…. you know why? I had 4 of my fellow Rackers attending this class and they got to see me snot covered, running out of breath and sweaty HAHA. I will say though, I am SOOOO proud of them for taking the initiative and going to class. I feel in part they motivated me to go that day.

Here are some pics of Nathan, Levi, Christine and Michael doing Squats Holds with their class.

    Welcome Back Amy

    2011 - 02.02

“Que Feo”—I am assuming the title of yesterday’s WOD was meant to give us a warning that it was NOT going to be pretty. Even so, I was not prepared for how I was going to feel for the WOD. Yesterday was day two of the Whole 30 challenge, and I must say it has been an adjustment period. I don’t say that its difficult because its a new diet or because I am not indulging in all the foods that I know are bad for me… I am saying it’s difficult because I am just now realizing how addicted my body became to coffee and redbull. I remember Rick telling us about the sugar dependencies that our bodies go through when we get so used to sugar induced highs. I didn’t think I was one of those people, but sure enough I am.

I was dizzy during yesterdays workout, and today my coworkers kept telling me I looked tired. These are two signs that kind of freaked me out. What was I thinking… depending on redbull to get me through the day. My family has a history of diabetes for goodness sake! Sugar… you are my new enemy!!

Yesterday we welcomed back an old Crossfitter that took a month and a half long hiatus… Similar to myself! One thing I have noticed is that people who truly believe in Crossfit will always come back. Whether it be for a vacation, a break from the gym or the holidays. When it’s time to come back to a workout regime… Crossfit is always the 1st pick! Amy came back yesterday and boy was she in for a doozy of a WOD. Here are the details:

Que Feo: 20 KB swings, 10 Clean &Jerks, 10 Back Squats, 10 Barbell hops, 20 AMRAP. Since I was so out of it due to my sugar cravings, I did not do the prescribed weight. I opted for 10 lbs less just to make sure I could go through the whole WOD. This left me at 55lbs for the clean and jerk and back squats and 25lbs for the kettle bell swings.

When you put it all together- I did 4 complete rounds. This ends up being, 80KB swings, 40 Clean and Jerks, 40 Back squats, and 40 barbell hops in 20 minutes. Not bad eh? After I caught my breath, I took a pick with Miss Amy to welcome her back to the pain cave :) Amy, I hope your ready for your upcoming burpee birthday!!!

As far as the Whole 30 challenge goes, I am still going strong. I prepared some delicious ground turkey mean, seasoned to perfection with some grilled zucchini, squash, onions and tomatoes. It came out fantastic!!! Day 2 down… 28 more to go!
